What would happen if everyone in the United States flushed their toilets at the same time?
A) Complete Universal System Failure
B) Localized Water Shortages
C) Pipe Explosions
Answer: Fortunately this would be an incredibly difficult act to orchestrate, because if it were pulled off the consequences would be fairly devastating.
If the millions of toilets in the United States were flushed simultaneously, both B & C would occur.
Most towns have their own water supply system. If every toilet in town were flushed at the same time, there would be not be enough water to accommodate every flush. This would lead to an instant water shortage at the local level.
As a result of the water shortages, toilets throughout the town would become dry as they wait for water to be restored. This is a dangerous situation as water could easily leak into the plumbing and create what is known as a “water hammer.” Water hammers are pressure surges caused by a sudden drop in the velocity of water through a pipeline. This drop in velocity can cause plumbing pipes to explode.
