1. Make sure to turn off the winter shut off valves in your home for the outdoor faucets. Make sure they are off before freezing temperatures arrive in mid to late fall. For a detailed video on winterizing your outdoor faucets watch this instructional video by Sanfor Kramer himself.
2. Check your water heater tank for drips or signs of leaks. As incoming ground temperatures decrease in the fall, the potential for a tank rupture and flooding increases due to your water heater expanding and contracting. This primarily affects water heaters that have been overworked or are over 10 years old. Here is a list of common ailments of neglected water heaters.
3. We frequently encounter jammed garbage disposals. If there is a humming noise when you turn on the disposal but not the usual grinding sound, then shut off the disposal. There is a slot directly in the center of bottom of the disposal where a disposal wrench or Allen key can help you free jammed blades. If you hear no noise when you flip the switch try resetting the disposal by turning off the switch and then pressing the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal. Always remember to use lots of water when running your disposal. For more information on what can and cannot go in your garbage disposals you can read this post.
