I recently posted a video about when to replace hot water heaters, and we’ve received some good feedback about the video. I thought I would follow up that video with another note about checking your hot water heater.
Along with checking your hot water heater for signs of leakage, it’s also important to inspect the water heater’s burner (if it’s a gas heater). A good way of inspecting the burner is to check the flame under the water heater. It should appear blue with yellow tips. If it’s mostly yellow or if you see a layer of soot and carbon, the flue ways may be clogged.
Clearing out the clogged flue ways will help the heater run more efficiently and safely. But don’t try anything yourself at this point. Call a professional to investigate the situation.
